Welcome to the 2011-2012 year for Pack 25 cub scouts. We have a monthly pack meeting in which each den will lead us in a flag ceremony, and they will do either a skit or game. The September meeting was lead by the Webelos II Den. They also received their Webelos Badges. Congratulations, Webelos! Each den was recognized for their summer and September accomplishments. Colton, Den Chief for Webelos II, taught the boys some team building skills in the game we played. A big thanks to Mr. Davis for leading the Pack meeting.

Webelow II Earn Arrow of Light Award

The highest award in Cub Scouting is the Webelos Arrow of Light award. It is the only Cub Scout badge that a scout can wear on his Boy Scout uniform. The boys worked on outdoor skills, physical fitness, and learned more about citizenship and working with others. After completing the Arrow of Light, they are now ready to bridge into a Boy Scout troop. While receiving their award, each scout shared a favorite memory of cub scouting. They will now transition from a leader/parent lead den/pack to a boy lead troop. We wish each of these boys great success as they take on this new aspect in scouting. Good Luck! Many thanks to Mr. Miller for his hard work and dedication to the den. Every scout in the den was successful in earning the Award.

We had a great time at Pinewood Derby!! There were 28 cars entered from Tiger Cubs to Webelos II. The boys each did a great job in building their entries. There were a lot of fast cars, and a lot of creative ones. Winners as follows:

The Lost Sea 1/2011

The Scouts had a blast crawling, sliding, and camping in the Lost Sea Cave. A phenomenon said to be thousands of years old, but the lake itself – hidden deep inside a cavern 30 feet beneath the surface – was not actually discovered until 1905. Today a 4.5 acre portion of the Lost Sea is a Registered Natural Landmark, so designated by the National Park Service, U.S. Department of the Interior, and is named in the Guiness Book of Records as “America’s Largest Underground Lake.” The actual size of the lake has not been determined.
Divers have discovered acres of flooded “rooms” in the cavern beneath the Lost Sea, and the conclusion is that there’s more to the Lost Sea than meets the eye. Cave experts say that the Lost Sea is a part of the Craighead Cavern system, known for the rare crystalline cave formation called anthodites.
The cave was once used by Cherokee Indians, later by Civil War soldiers, and over the more recent years, as a dance hall, cockfight venue, and a favorite place of moonshiners. In the 1950s, the cave was designated a fallout shelter.

The pack entered the Christmas Parade using the theme "Santa's Workshop". The boys rode the float through downtown Athens. It was a great night, with fun had by all. Many thanks to the parents that worked on the float.

The Bear Den took a field trip to the Athens Police Station in October. We learned about the Dispatch and we had a question and answer session in their roll call room. He told us how to stay safe and be a good citizen. All the boys were fingerprinted. We learned about all the tools the policemen wear on their belt, and what they carry in the car. Most importantly, we learned that Athens has a great police department that is here to serve us!

The pack enjoyed Cub Haunted Weekend at Camp Comer October 8-9, 2010. Fun was had by all. It was a beautiful weekend for camping. The boys participated in BB shooting, archery, haunted grove, hayride and more. This is definitely one campout to stay on the calendar.

The Webelos celebrated their bridging ceremony into Troop 21 on May 24, 2010 at Big Spring Park. Bridging is an important transition from the parent-led Cub Scout’s life to the boy-led Boy Scout life. It’s a defining moment when a boy becomes aware of his achievements and is ready for new adventures and responsibilities in scouting. The boys left the cub scout neckerchief behind and "bridged" to the Boy Scouts where they were presented with their new neckerchiefs. They learned the meanings of each of the aspects of the Boy Scout Law, and recited the Scout Promise. They were then dismissed and enjoyed refreshments at the pavillion as Boy Scouts!

The pack enjoyed watching the Huntsville Stars take on the West Tennessee Diamond Jaxx in a very exciting game. The home team won in the bottom of the 9th with a final score of 6-5! The boys set up their tents on the field after play ended. They enjoyed activities on the field during the night. After a yummy morning breakfast of Krispy Kreme Donuts and juice, everyone packed up and left, so the Stars could have another exciting day of baseball on the field!

The Wolf Den enjoyed a visit to the Veteran's Museum on January 19, 2010. They viewed artifacts from each of the military organizations. The tour guides were veterans, and they informed the boys about several wars in which the U.S. participated.

ABS Pack 25 celebrated their 2010 Blue and Gold Banquet on April 10, 2010. We had an Olympic theme this year called "Going for the Blue and Gold."

Each Den was responsible for decorating their own table using this year's Olympic theme. The tables were judged by Chris Reno and the Webelos I Den took top honors in that competition! You can see pictures of the winning table in the slideshow above.

There was also a Father / Son Dessert Contest in which they made a yummy dessert and had to decorate it using this year's banquet theme. Chris Reno judged that competition, too. Kasey and Chase Harbin won first place in this competition. Craig and Andrew Adams won 2nd place. James and John Paul won third place. All of the yummy desserts can be seen in the slideshow above.

We enjoyed great company, great food, and great entertainment. David Fortenberry entertained us with a slideshow of all of the scouting events from this past year. Each den also entertained us with their funny skits and songs.

The scouts were also awarded for their many achievements they earned during the year. The Webelos II Den was awarded with their Arrow of Light patches. They worked hard most of the year on Cub Scout's highest honor. Congratulations to all of the scouts for all of their hard work this year.

Webelos II Outdoor Activity with ABS Troop 21

ABS Troop 21 invited the Webelos II den from ABS Pack 25 to participate in an outdoor activity with them. The Scouts from ABS Troop 21 were working on requirements toward their Orienteering Merit Badge.

All the boys met at Monte Sano Mountain State Park at 9am on March 27, 2010. After a lesson on how to use their Compass and Map for orienteering, they set out on their adventure.

ABS Pack 25 Trip to USS Alabama Battleship (January 15, 2010)

ABS Pack 25 took a trip to Mobile, AL on January 15, 2010 to spend the night on the USS Alabama Battleship. After boarding the ship, they chose their bunks for the night, dropped their gear, then gathered together for an evening devotional led my Mark Nave.

After the devotional, the Scouts were free to go on a night tour of the battleship. Some of the scouts even participated in a scavenger hunt.

The next morning, the scouts did not let the torrential downpour keep them from continuing their fun as they toured the rest of the Battleship Memorial Park.

ABS Pack 25 Visits Limestone Health Facility 12-18-09

The pack has been collecting donations all week for the residents who live at the Limestone Healthy Facility. They collected many items such as: blankets, snuggies, house shoes, socks, books, wordsearch puzzle books, coloring books, crayons, lotions, etc.

They delivered the donated supplies today. While they were there, they walked up and down the halls singing Christmas carols. The residents and workers really seemed happy to see the scouts today. The residents loved seeing the children. The children learned an important lesson on serving others today.

ABS Pack 25 adopted the Athens Greenway and are doing their part to keep it clean. This is a set of trails that begin at the Athens Sportsplex, go around Athens High School, and end up at Hwy 31 just below Lowes. Check out the pictures below:

Pack Hike 11-14-09

The following video scrapbook contains pictures from our Pack Hike on 11-14-09. We met at the Little Red Caboose in Elkmont, AL. Then we headed North on the Rails to Trails. We walked 3 miles to the covered bridge. Then we turned around and headed back to the caboose. We hiked a total of 6 miles that day.

Tim Richter took his Webelos II den hiking on 9-18-09 at Rails to Trails in Elkmont, AL. It had been raining most of that day. But, God blessed us with a beautiful afternoon - perfect for hiking. While on the hike, he taught them some information they will need to earn their Forester Activity Pin. They learned to identify several trees. They learned which plants to avoid in the forest such as poison ivy. He also helped them learn the 12 points of the Boy Scout Law by getting them to repeat it as a team all during the hike. By the end of the hike many of the boys had memorized it because of his help. They hiked 3 miles. They were hungry and tired at the end of the day, but they had a blast! September 19th - We will meet at 5pm to pick up trash along the greenway at the park. We will meet right behind the Tennis Courts next to Athens High School. If you have any questions about this event, call Tim Richter - Webelos II Den Leader.

September 26th - Fishing Rodeo at Joe Wheeler. You can click on the Link for the Arrowhead District on this website to download a registration form.

October 9-11th - Gem and Mineral Show at Von Braun Civic Center - South Hall. Oct. 9th and 10th - open from 10am to 6pm. Oct. 11 open noon to 5pm. Scouts and leaders in uniform get in free. Siblings to scouts are also free. Parents are $2.00. All Cub Scouts that attend will earn their Geology Beltloop and Pin. Webelos Scouts will earn their Geologist Activity Pin.

October 10th - Scout Day at the Space and Rocket Center. The cost is $18.00 per person. This includes your admission, one IMAX movie, hamburger lunch, a patch and certificate for each participating scout.

October 16th - Cub Haunted at Camp Comer. You can download a registration form for this event from the Arrowhead District Website. A link to that website is on the right hand side of this blog. You must register at least 1 week prior to this session to avoid a late fee.

“Hi, my name is Austin Britnell and I am a Webelos II Scout. I am sad because this is my last year in Cub Scouts, but I know it will be fun. I can’t wait until Cub Haunted and I am looking forward to going to the campout on the USS Alabama again!! Hopefully it won’t be too cold this year for our Christmas Parade. In February we will have our Pinewood Derby. Last year I placed 2nd. I can’t wait to see how I do this year. We will celebrate the end of the year with our annual Blue and Gold Banquet. We always have lots of yummy food! After all the fun things this year I will have my bridging ceremony and then I will be a Boy Scout. Then the fun will start all over again!”

The cub scouts and their families from ABS Pack 25 enjoyed a funfilled evening at the Huntsville Stars Baseball Game on August 21, 2009. We enjoyed the game, but we also enjoyed each other's company and snacking on some typical baseball game snacks. We got to run out on the field while "Who Let the Dog's Out" played loudly over the speakers. We got our picture made with Homer (the mascot). After the ballgame, we saw an awsome fireworks show. It only lasted about 10 minutes, but it was the best way to end a great evening with all of our scout friends and family from Pack 25. Cub Scout Day Camp - 2009

Cub Scout Day Camp was held at Point Mallard in Decatur, AL on June 1 - 5, 2009. The theme of this year's camp was called "CSI - Cub Scout Investigations". There were nineteen scouts from ABS attending Day Camp this year. The boys enjoyed a fun-filled week learning all kinds of new things. They also completed a lot of requirements needed to go toward their achievements.

We enjoyed a fun-filled evening at our Blue and Gold Banquet on May 9, 2009 at the Athens Bible School Cafeteria. "Scouting the Great Outdoors" was the theme of our banquet this year. Roger Bedingfield from Roger's Portraits set up a mini-studio to take pictures of our scouts and leaders. We enjoyed some great food and entertainment during the evening. Eric Roth, our Cub Master, prepared a great slideshow of this past year's scouting events. Our scouts also entertained us by performing amusing skits. We had a Father/Son Cake Decorating Contest - Bill and Nicholas Ulrich had the winning cake. Their cake featured campers sleeping in sleeping bags next to a campfire. Check out the picture of this winning cake in the slideshow above. The other participants did a great job, too. Chase and Kasey Harbin made a camping themed cake and Caleb Boyd made a very yummy dessert. All of those desserts were gobbled up quickly. We did not have very many left-overs. The Bear Den took top honors in the Table Decoration Contest with their "Trail Maps" theme. Each Bear in the den made a "hiking trail map" to display on the table. They used other camping gear as decorations on their table, too. They did a great job! You will see their winning table in the slideshow above. The Tigers made "Tiger" placemats and their table was decorated using a western theme. The Wolf Den was very creative in using a canopy over their "camping" themed table. They used items from various events they participated in during the year as decorations as well. The Webelos I and Webelos II joined forces in the competition this year to create a camping themed table, too. They made "scout friends" to display as if they were hiking in the woods. The Webelos II were depicted on a bridge to commemorate their "bridging ceremony" that took place as they crossed over from cub scouts to boy scouts. Thanks to all of those who helped set up and decorate for the banquet, prepared food, brought drinks and helped clean up afterward. Many thanks goes to all of our den leaders, assistant den leaders and other volunteers for all of the hard work you have done this year. We would also like to thank Eric and Melinda Roth for all of their hard work in organizing all of our pack activities. As Eric Roth becomes our new Chairman, we want to thank David Fortenberry for stepping up to take over the role as our new Cub Master. We have had a great scouting year and look forward to the summer activities and the activities that are planned for next year!

Webelos II Bridging Ceremony over to Boy Scouts - April 20, 2009

On April 20, 2009, three Webelos from ABS Pack 25 "bridged" over to the ABS Boy Scout Troop 21. The Bridging Ceremony was held at Big Springs Park in Athens, AL. The ceremony began with Jake as the Color Guard Caller and Ben as the Flag Bearer during the Color Guard Advance. The Pledge of Allegience was led by Andrew. Scout Oath was led by Alexander. Dayton led the troop in reciting the Scout Law. After a prayer led by Garret, Mr. Calvert, Troop Committee Chair, welcomed the Troop and the Pack to the ceremony. Then, Mr. Eric Roth, Cubmaster of Pack 25, gave a farewell speech to the Webelos from his pack and removed the Webelos neckerchief and shoulder loops from their uniforms. Then each Webelo was called to cross the bridge over to Troop 21 from Pack 25. After each Webelo crossed over the bridge they were welcomed by Gary Boyd, Scoutmaster of Troop 21. The Boys Scouts from Troop 21 presented Dalton, Corbin, and Sam with their new Boy Scout neckerchief and shoulder loops. Then Dalton, Corbin, and Sam repeated the Scout Oath with Troop 21. Each part of the Scout Law was stated during a candle lighting ceremony. Then the ceremony ended with a prayer. Congatulations Dalton, Corbin and Sam!

We had a great race today! Thanks to all of those that set up things on Friday night and thanks to all of the volunteers who worked today. The race ran so smoothly because of all of you! Webelos Earned their Handyman Activity Pin - October 20, 2008

Kasey Harbin allowed the boys to work on their Handyman Activity Pin requirements up at McClary Tire Co. in Athens, AL on October 20, 2008. Kasey along with the help of some of the other Dads (Tim Richter, Tim Sandlin, Scott Britnell, Gary Boyd, Lance Perry and Mike McCoy) showed the boys how to check the oil in a car, check the tire pressure in a tire, replace a light bulb in the tail light of a car, change a tire, oil a bicycle chain, and adjust handle bars and seats on a bicycle. The boys had a great time at the tire store. Kasey let them finish off the meeting with a free drink from the coke machine and he let them all take a tire pressure gauge home with them. Thanks Mr. Kasey!

Steve Usery and Tim Richter were chosen from the audience to participate in the "Candy Store" skit at Cub Haunted. Tim Richter plays the role of the ceiling fan inside the candy store. Steve Usery plays the role with another person to be the swinging doors that lead into the candy store. During the skit, someone will enter the doors to the candy store, go up to the sales clerk and ask for a particular candy item. They don't have the item that the person asks for so he/she leaves. Then others will come and go asking for candy during the skit. The skit lasts as long as the "ceiling fan" can function. Tim did a great job as the ceiling fan. But, you will get a laugh as you see his motor "running out" at the end.

Pack 25 had a great time at Cub Haunted at Camp Comer in Mentone, AL. They got to participate in many fun activities such as: haunted hay ride, haunted trail, rock climbing wall, hike to Moon Rock, pedal cars, archery, and BB guns. We also enjoyed some great entertainment at the Campfire Ceremony at the camp amphitheater (especially the skits starring Tim Richter and Steve Usery). Our pack spent a little time together at their campsite building their own campfire, eating smores, and telling funny stories and jokes. They can't wait to do it all over again next year!

Scout Day at the U. S. Space and Rocket Center - October 4, 2008

On October 4, 2008 ABS Pack 25 participated in Scout Day at the U. S. Space and Rocket Center in Huntsville, AL. We had 13 scouts in all (including one of the ABS girl scouts)participate in Scout Day. We got to see a movie titled "Fly Me to the Moon" at the 3-D Digital Theater, ride some really cool rides, climb a rock wall, and learn some important history about our U. S. Space program. We had a great day!

Webelos Get a Lesson on the U. S. Flag - Sept. 30, 2008

Tim Richter, Tim Sandlin, and Gary Boyd taught the Webelos 1 den some important information about the U. S. Flag. Each cub scout had to learn how to hoist and lower the flag, how to hang it horizontally and vertically on a wall, and how to fold it. They were taught why we should respect our country's flag, some special days we fly it, and when and how to salute the flag. They also recited the Pledge of Allegience. These Webelos have met requirements #3, #4, and #5 of their Citizen Webelos Activity Badge.

Belt Loop Jamboree, September 27, 2008

Stephen Usery, ABS Wolf Den Leader, organized a Belt Loop Jamboree as one of his requirements toward earning his Wood Badge. This event took place at Athens Bible School on September 27, 2008. Cub Scouts throughout the Arrowhead District had the opportunity to earn three Academic Belt Loops (Wildlife Conservation, Language and Culture, and Map and Compass) and four Sports Belt Loops (Marbles, Badminton, Volleyball, and Flag Football).

The boys had so much fun earning those belt loops. Thank you, Stephen, for doing such a GREAT job organizing the Belt Loop Jamboree. Thanks to all of the parents, boys scouts and girl scouts that volunteered their time and effort to making this event a success, too.

Davy Crockett Camp-out - June 2008

David Crockett State Park was dedicated in May of 1959, in honor of one of Tennessee's most famous native sons. David Crockett was a pioneer, soldier, politician, industrialist and was born near the little town of Limestone in northeast Tennessee in 1786. In 1817, he moved to Lawrence County and served as a justice of the peace, a colonel of the militia, and as state representative. Along the banks of Shoal Creek, in what is now his namesake park, he established a diversified industry consisting of a powdermill, a gristmill and a distillery. All three operations were washed away in a flood in September, 1821. Financial difficulties from this loss caused Crockett to move to West Tennessee where he was elected to Congress. While in Washington, he fought for his people's right to keep land they had settled on the new frontier of West Tennessee. Crockett died at the Alamo Mission in March of 1836 while aiding the Texans in their fight for independence from Mexico.

USS Alabama Battleship Trip - February 2008

Pack 25 spent Friday night, Feb. 15th, 2008 aboard the USS Alabama in Mobile, AL. They participated in a scavenger hunt that night before sleeping in bunks aboard the ship. They had to find various places on the ship such as the helm, the brig, the mess hall, etc. This was not an easy task, because they did this after sundown and it was very dark. Greg Chandler led them in a devotional before bed time. They had to rise early the next morning for breakfast at 6:30am.

On Saturday, they were free to tour the battleship and the other things in the Memorial Park such as the submarine called the USS Drum and WWII planes and helicopters. Many thanks to Eric and Melinda Roth for organizing this trip. Thanks to the parents who helped supply snacks and drinks for the children and thanks to the Dad's aboard the ship who had to take care of not only their own scout, but some extra scouts whose Dad's were not able to attend this trip.

Bat Cave Clean and Learn - August, 2008

In the late summer, over 40,000 endangered Gray Bats can be seen emerging from the Wheeler National Wildlife Refuge’s Cave Springs Cave at twilight. On August 9, members of the Wheeler Refuge staff were on-site to talk about wildlife found around Cave Springs Cave including the endangered Gray Bat.

Pack 25 participated in this “Clean and Learn”. We helped pick up trash along the roadside near the Cave Springs Cave. After enjoying a little watermelon break, we heard a bat expert tell us about the endangered gray bats that lived in Cave Springs Cave. Just before dark, we watched thousands of gray bats emerge from the cave.
